That’s a wrap on IF 2020!

In only a few months, The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI), put together and hosted IF 2020, this 24-hour online festival that featured 150+ artists from 20+ countries around the globe.

The festival sought not only to provide respite from the practical and psychological challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to allow attendees and artists—in spite of physical distance—to dream together and “imagine the world anew.” Thank you to the over 2500 viewers from over 50 countries who joined us for this singular event!
This festival would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors (Musagetes, The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and the University of Guelph’s College of Arts & Office of Research) and our 20+ partnering organizations and co-presenters, which you can learn more about on our “Sponsors & Partners” tab. Thanks to these supporters, IF 2020 was able to commission new works from 150+ artists worldwide and support  the dedicated festival team in making this vision a reality.

Because of IF 2020, we were able to see the diverse ways in which artists continued to make impactful work despite being relegated to their home environments: for some artists, this was their first digital presentation of work, their first opportunity to make art since the pandemic began, or even their first public improvisation. What resulted was a kaleidoscopic range of performances, a reminder of what creators can imagine if prompted or given the opportunity. Whether they featured musicians, spoken word poets, dancers, theatre practitioners, filmmakers, or visual artists, IF 2020’s pieces became a creative time capsule of this unprecedented moment in history, as told through 150+ unique voices. Thank you to our incredible artists for their contributions.

We feel grateful to have had the opportunity to put on such an event, and we look forward to feeling the positive effects of this festival ripple into the future!
