What is IF 2023?
IF 2023 is the fourth edition of the IF Festival, a 24-hour celebration of off-the-cuff art-making showcasing new, improvised works.
IF 2023 will feature robust, in-person programming at IICSI’s new state-of-the-art performance space, ImprovLab, and in other spaces across the University of Guelph campus—all while continuing to offer the Festival’s distinctive 24-hour digital stream. The Festival will also coincide with two other stellar events: an exhibition celebrating 15 years of improvisation research, Improvising Communities: A Retrospective Exhibition, and the 2023 Sound Meaning Education academic conference: CONVERSATIONS & improvisations.
IF 2023 is put on by the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of Guelph, with the support of sponsors and partners from around the globe.
How much does IF 2023 cost? Do I need a ticket?
All IF 2023 activities are completely free and open to all!
In order to attend in-person IF 2023 events, you are encouraged to register in advance via Eventbrite. Even though our opening and closing concerts have sold out, there are so many more performances and artistic happenings to explore over the weekend!
If you are joining us online, you can simply stream the event through the livestream on our website (via the Watch tab) once the festival begins on October 20th.
Where is IF 2023 happening?
IF 2023 is a hybrid Festival, with most events taking place in-person on the University of Guelph campus. The Festival will be centred at ImprovLab, part of the Arts Research Centre (ARC) located in the MacKinnon building.

ONLINE: IF 2023 will be streamed on this website (improvfest.ca) under the “watch” tab. This year’s digital component will be streamed via Twitch.
ON THE RADIO: Overnight programming for IF 2023 (2am–7am, ET) will be streamed via CFRU 93.3 fm (Guelph and online), featuring amazing programming from our partners around the world. Check out the IF 2023 Schedule page more details!
When does IF 2023 start/end?
IF 2023 begins on October 20th, with evening performances starting at 7pm (ET). The Festival runs until the evening of October 21st, with the final performance concluding around 9pm (ET).

What if I miss IF 2023? Can I watch the digitally streamed performances after the fact?
You could only experience IF 2023 on October 20–21, 2023. This means that performances will only be available online for the duration of the festival and cannot be viewed digitally after this date.
